Functional Medicine & Chinese Medicine Working Together

Getting to the root of the problem

Functional medicine is a health oriented, collaborative patient centered model. It focuses on the root cause of disease and dysfunction while considering biochemical individuality. With a blood work model that is much broader than typical western medicine lab markers, it is more cost effective over time because functional medicine utilizes a preventative approach for chronic and long term illnesses. It is both high touch and high tech meaning; palpation, detailed questioning and observation are typically used in diagnosis along with high tech western equipment such as labs and imagining. Primarily, it utilizes dietary and lifestyle changes along with nutrition, supplementation and herbal medicine.

And what is Chinese medicine?

Similarly Chinese medicine is a whole systems approach that considers the entire person including observation, pulse taking and a detailed intake to discover root causes of disease. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has evolved over thousands of years and relies on modalities such as acupuncture, tai chi, cupping, herbal medicine. Supportive Elements within the medicine also include dietary and lifestyle changes alongside nutritional advice.

Functional Medicine vs. Chinese Medicine

Both gravitate towards approaches that help improve quality of life and prevent/treat chronic pain and disease. Each system of medicine considers various organs systems that work in harmony to perform a given function. The major difference is that functional medicine accomplishes this through blood work, Chinese medicine accomplishes detailed diagnosis through observation and diagnosis. We don’t think of discrete organs, we think of organs and the entire body system works  together.

What we offer

At Well Balanced we offer a comprehensive a Chinese medicine based holistic assessment. We do have the ability to look over existing blood work or refer out to a primary care physician for blood work. We do not have the ability to order blood work in our clinic at this time. Our practitioners can work with you to find the best lifestyle recommendations based on blood work that you bring to us. We request that blood work is done at least 90 days before your appointment.

*Additional fees apply to reading lab results. Please inquire with the front desk to learn more.
