Do you get shoulder pain in the bench press?

Do you get pain on the front of your shoulder during the bench press? You’re not alone. As a physical therapist, this is something I see a lot. Here are a few things to think about for your next chest day!

Have you checked your neck?

The neck has a lot to do with the stability and strength of the shoulders. This is a good thing. Except. It’s a relationship that’s easy to abuse when you’re trying to lift the heaviest weight possible. Like in the bottom of a heavy bench press, for example. Usually this isn’t a big deal, but if you’ve started to get that sharp stabbing pain on the front of your shoulder, there’s a good chance your neck is working overtime.

This is a neck working REALY hard. This person is also likely missing shoulder internal rotation.
This is what a relaxed neck looks like. No more double chin! Look at that open air way!
